The Beauty of Sorrow

The picture is mine, as well as the poem.  This is not a eulogy, nor was it written for a specific person.  After listening to the recent NASA release of the "sound" of a black hole, I was overcome with one of those image/feelings about the nature of sorrow.  This is not some kind of negative darkness to avoid, it is merely a part of life that happens.  If one believes that life has the power to bring beauty through all things, then beauty can also be found through sorrow.

Sorrow is tied with loss,

The fear of losing something,

The pain of losing someone,

Or something being destroyed.

Energy cannot be created,

Energy cannot be destroyed,

All matter is made of energy,

So what can be truly lost?

Sorrow is like a fine wine,

Dry with a touch of sweetness,

For if a wine is to be born,

The grape must truly die.

Yet death stands defeated by love,

Like with Nathaniel Batts and Kickowanna,

Whose spirits roam joined forever,

On the shores of hearts which remember.

Sorrow is tied with pain,

And yet pain is a part of love,

When we risk joining with another heart,

Feeling beauty evoke tears instead of words.

All life that we see around us,

Is but a chapter in an eternal song,

No one likes to see a good chapter end,

Yet we turn the page for what is to come.

The Earth is but a temporal stage,

Where we bring to life matters of the heart,

For anything that is created through love,

Finds place within the realm of eternity.

The “sounds” of a black hole are haunting,

Like the last cries of mass before oblivion,

Yet the mass is transformed into energy,

To be born as matter again anew.

And so the beauty of sorrow is love,

With love being our gift from God,

For with love the stars were created,

And by the stars we find our way home.

For Olivia

For Olivia Newtwon-John I had written this 10 years ago, and handed it to her.  I recently saw some typographical errors and cadence issues which probably gave her a smile.  I posted it the day that she passed away, in honor of her life.  While fixing this I rewrote it to reflect how I feel after her death.  I still cannot feel like she is gone.  Perhaps that is because she is closer now, in each one of our hearts.

Dedicated to Olivia Newton-John

By Eric Visconti

She came from down under,

With a voice like no other,

Singing love of life from her heart,

All those with ears,

Would hear beauty through the years,

That has blossomed fully from the start.

From the country she came,

A southern style she sang,

Joining voice and heart with John,

With Denver she could “Fly Away”,

Not knowing away he would fly,

Yet she carried on his love in her song.

With Andy so young and so bright,

She sang her song in new light,

With the Brothers Gibb,

Singing with Maurice and Barry,

She would not let love be thrown away,

When away flew the life of Andy.

When the storm came for her,

She clung to the tree,

As cancer came like wind blown hail,

She would not give up her heart,

She would not silence her love,

And in singing her life did prevail.

Through all of this and more,

She has sailed her ship to shore,

Sails billowing love’s power through song,

As we are each broken by pain,

We hear her voice again,

And know that no trials may last too long.

For us she never gave up,

And never gave in,

Which is why I feel her now,

As though she is here,

From us she never wanted to part,

With us she lives in our hearts.

Share your love with others,

In honor of the way she lived,

And light her heart from where you stand,

She remains a shining example,

Of how strength comes through love,

Which is why this is written for Olivia.

Seven Nights Until Dawn

For Anne Heche and family – I wrote some of this and in posting on her Instagram page I received more comments and interaction than I remember in over 10 years of writing poems, and creating posts for people. (I have a lot, you can check. J)  Here I completed the poem for her, gave it a name, and placed it where all can see.

You were a broken soul,

Like so many of us,

Yet you fought through the damage and pain,

You found your gift,

To reach across the rift,

To help us feel whole again.

You became so darn good,

At that thing you do,

You performed with Pacino and Ford,

Yet no one is perfect,

Who walks in this world,

And you struggled to find your accord.

A child has memories that will build her,

You had memories that did haunt,

Delivered by the most trusted soul,

In escaping from that past,

You gave us escape upon the stage,

As you fought every day to be whole.

You sought to love others in life,

Seeking one soul to be close to,

You found a love Hollywood could not embrace,

Yet what you were shunned for,

Has found exaltation today,

Though you were denied your place.

We all make mistakes,

We have all done wrong,

These are confessions from honest souls,

Yet we seek joy and love,

As you found with your sons,

Through love we are each made whole.

You were a mother and a friend,

Giving your heart to many,

Today many pray you are filled with love,

Standing by God’s warm heart,

While you touch His face,

Embraced by Heaven above.

Outride the Tears

Written for Elvis and all who love him.

From August 16th, 45 years ago.

I recall the living room as a boy,

Near the stereo I about destroyed,

Where records lay at the base,

And the news came in above.

I remember the day,

When they said he passed away,

This rock and roll king with power,

Yet a voice just like a dove.

My mom broke down and cried,

I remember wondering why,

Then they handed me an album,

And they told me it was him.

And so I listened to it play,

And the sadness came that day,

So I grabbed my bike outside,

And I told them I would ride.

All I heard in the streets as I rode,

From the homes with windows open,

Were the sounds of sadness while his music played.

The feelings he endeared,

I could hear both far and near,

No matter how fast I rode I could not outride the tears.

The years saw me grow into a man,

And things I would better understand,

Like how a country boy could stand and rise,

Through song he become a king.

And how the fame cost him a price,

In the whirlwind he found his vice,

When his family broke he was left without a thing.

His heart did feel the pain of separation,

His soul voiced those emotions into song,

And millions loved the man through those years.

He clung to his crowds of adoration,

Yet through the vices and all the cheers,

The King could not outride the tears.

So many years have passed since then,

He has been walking in a paradise of love,

In a place where he can embrace all of us in song,

Because love is the only bond worth giving.

The heart knows this language beyond words,

Which we will all speak once beyond the clouds,

And that peace is how we smile with his memory,

And how in our hearts he does go on living.

Imagine him knowing each one of us by name,

When we see him near the King of all Kings,

Together we will do away with years.

For Heaven is such a place,

Where we all will touch His face,

And love has out rode the tears.

Cold Light

In contemplation of the need to come together to spark the reawakening of hearts needed to overcome dark times.

The light is cold,

From the black sun,

Where life and time,

Are crushed away.

Light can not escape,

This mind bending reality,

 Where normal is forgotten,

And the nightmare stays.

Such is our world,

Where fathers and mothers,

Join hands and hearts,

In turning away from their sons.

With warnings unheeded,

They feign surprise,

After a Chicago parade,

Where tragic deeds were done.

If our hearts embrace this cold light,

Our souls will be lost to the night.

In every community,

The silent do suffer,

Fighting cancer or tragedy,

Which many know is true.

While the church going practice,

Faith without action,

Making potent words empty,

Saying, “I”ll pray for you!”

With a distant invasion,

Or killing many with a car,

In the city of Berlin,

We say, “The problem isn’t mine.”

Yet darkness sweeps the world,

Through this butterfly effect,

In sharing the same feeling hearts,

We are all human kind.

If our hearts embrace this cold light,

Our souls will be lost to the night.

We each hold a flame,

A small light in the darkness,

Yet when flames come together,

They create a huge fire.

God gave us each other,

We can overcome together,

Through all situations,

No matter how dire.

Love creates faith,

Faith creates action,

Action creates change,

Bringing a sunrise through night.

So look into the eyes,

Of all who are near you,

Through the connection of souls,

We dispel the cold light.

The Distance of Beauty

I just wrote this contemplating how beauty is easily found out of reach, yet hardest to find in the mirror.

A face is the life of beauty,

Each curve adding character,

Every detail a thing to remember,

Skin of warmth and light,

Eyes giving joy as a gift,

Yet in the mirror it is just a face.

We long for what is distant,

For people drive past castles to work,

Being only dark things on the hills,

Yet to those far away they are magic,

And to visit makes fairytales come true,

As magic and mystery fill the heart.

We see palm trees and surfboards in film,

From a west coast where movies are made,

To visit seems only a dream,

To walk in a place on the screen,

Yet people work and live there each day,

Longing to be somewhere else.

The truth is a clear reflection,

Beauty surrounds us like the air,

To see it requires vision of the heart,

For the eyes can be blinded by pain,

Yet the soul remains open to truth,

So we can see what is already there.

When light is seen through the heart,

A soul walks in constant amazement,

Life becomes magic to share,

With beauty as close as our skin,

Hearing silent colors of the world,

So we can share the magic with a smile.

Continuance

Each life is for a time,

Making impact for eternity,

For there is no such thing as time,

Making distance an illusion,

Bringing all close together,

For there is only love.

Your heart is in our souls,

Your flame adding to our light,

As you have added light to many,

Which burn like stars in the night,

So when you look into the dark sky,

You will see the light of your life.

We are but a few,

The few are examples of many,

And this is the purpose of life,

Bringing meaning to beating hearts,

And what we make on this Earth in love,

Adds to the beauty of Heaven forever.

Our eyes in life see only shadows,

Yet the heart sees with true vision,

So you must close your eyes to illusion,

To see the colors of the song of life,

As we see the colors of joy,

Being blessed for knowing you.

The Comfortable Illusion

There is an unseen ability,

In the ability to unsee,

As one person looks at another,

Not acknowledging their words,

Not reading their feelings,

As if they were not there.

On our phones we see the world,

Missing the birds in the trees,

Missing the souls on the streets,

Not seeing lightning from the clouds,

While beneath an endless sky,

Where dreams were once made real.

Yet on the chance two souls meet,

Through the windows of the eyes,

The spark ignites a fire,

Which draws others from the darkness,

Setting them aglow,

Turning the night into day.

Yet seeing invites joy,

Seeing evokes pain,

For only the heart can see truly,

Which pushes back the boundaries,

Expanding the universe of possibility,

Giving others hope.

The fear of connecting,

Is only an illusion,

Whereas being alone in life,

Is the true darkness,

Since God gave us each other,

And no one manages alone.

The Instance of Forever

Can an instant be forgotten in the endlessness of time, or is moment a universe in itself?  I contemplated this looking at the eyes which met mine while passing before a window.

When we lock eyes with another,

It is but an instant,

Yet the mind does not forget,

Anything seen or heard,

So all of those moments,

And all of those faces,

Add to our beings,

Causing us to grow.

Each moment becomes a chance,

To share the gift of a smile,

The strength of a word,

Or the wisdom of love,

As each face hides a story,

Of triumph or tragedy,

And the gifts which we give,

Change the courses of life.

This flow can be seen,

Within the course of a river,

Or the face of the seashore,

Rearranged by the storm,

As each element of change,

Must add to the story,

While each moment of being,

Stands forever in time.

These things I will write,

As a mere tinkerer of words,

With my eyes within the world,

And my heart outside of time,

That you may see the unseen,

Behind all which you see,

That you may stand in astonishment,

Before the magic of life.

The Power of Love

I just wrote this for someone who was losing hope.

Many spend a generation not truly living,

A few live without limits every moment,

For time is a cruel illusion of Earth,

Only the heart has true vision,

And life is endless for the heart.

Treasures of living are in the souls we touch,

For each contact makes a lasting change,

We each have free will to chose our impact,

And the gift of love is power without limit,

Creating fruit that reproduces with each smile.

Men have sought truth over the centuries,

Yet it is offered freely in the hand of God,

Something you chose to accept and multiply,

For your touch brings joy to many lives,

Sparking the love which brings meaning to all.

If love can heal the complexity of our souls,

God certainly uses it to heal the body,

For lives like yours are stars in the darkness,

The stars always guide souls lost at sea,

And you have many more to guide home.
