Written for Elvis and all who love him.
From August 16th, 45 years ago.
I recall the living room as a boy,
Near the stereo I about destroyed,
Where records lay at the base,
And the news came in above.
I remember the day,
When they said he passed away,
This rock and roll king with power,
Yet a voice just like a dove.
My mom broke down and cried,
I remember wondering why,
Then they handed me an album,
And they told me it was him.
And so I listened to it play,
And the sadness came that day,
So I grabbed my bike outside,
And I told them I would ride.
All I heard in the streets as I rode,
From the homes with windows open,
Were the sounds of sadness while his music played.
The feelings he endeared,
I could hear both far and near,
No matter how fast I rode I could not outride the tears.
The years saw me grow into a man,
And things I would better understand,
Like how a country boy could stand and rise,
Through song he become a king.
And how the fame cost him a price,
In the whirlwind he found his vice,
When his family broke he was left without a thing.
His heart did feel the pain of separation,
His soul voiced those emotions into song,
And millions loved the man through those years.
He clung to his crowds of adoration,
Yet through the vices and all the cheers,
The King could not outride the tears.
So many years have passed since then,
He has been walking in a paradise of love,
In a place where he can embrace all of us in song,
Because love is the only bond worth giving.
The heart knows this language beyond words,
Which we will all speak once beyond the clouds,
And that peace is how we smile with his memory,
And how in our hearts he does go on living.
Imagine him knowing each one of us by name,
When we see him near the King of all Kings,
Together we will do away with years.
For Heaven is such a place,
Where we all will touch His face,
And love has out rode the tears.
